    Making Gains!

The new month brings the start of Fall and with that the start of a busy season for our district and schools. With fall sports in full swing, band performances and college field trips, our students are filling their time with enriching activities inside and outside of the classroom.

As many of you may know, each year students in California participate in a state assessment called the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Unlike a multiple-choice exam, this assessment asks students to demonstrate and apply the skills they have learned in the classroom. The exam is designed to help test a student’s critical thinking, writing, and problem-solving skills which are skills that our students need to succeed in college and career.

Our teachers, administrators, and support staff work hard to provide the resources, support and encouragement each of our students needs to succeed in the classroom, on the CAASP and beyond. The recent release of CAASPP scores indicates that our improvement in instructional methods and investment in the professional development of our educators has paid dividends. Test scores show that the Azusa Unified School district has seen more gains overall than most districts throughout California. The number of students who have met or exceeded state standards has increased by four percentage points in English Language Arts and Mathematics.  This increase far exceeds state gains.

Our scores give us cause to be proud of the progress our students have made, and it gives us the encouragement to persevere knowing that our methods are proving to be successful. Though our gains are significant, we are by no means at the finish line. We will continue to work hard to ensure that every one of our students has the resources and support they need to reach their full potential and be successful in any college or career path they choose.
