School Board Meeting Agenda

Message from the Superintendent, Sept. 20, 2017

The single most important factor in ensuring a child’s success in school is the presence of an outstanding teacher in the classroom, and the School Board and I believe that Azusa Unified teachers are some of the very best in California.

Earlier this year, labor contract negotiations between AUSD and the Azusa Educators Association (AEA), the bargaining unit for our teachers, stalled and entered what’s known as “impasse,” which means that one party to the negotiations believed that the two sides were so far from agreement that further negotiation was pointless.

I am very pleased to report that the AEA and the school district have agreed that resuming good-faith discussion is best for everyone involved, especially our students.

Going forward, we will continue to show all our employees the respect they deserve for their outstanding commitment to the success of the students we serve.

Regarding DACA

To the Azusa Unified community:

The Trump Administration’s decision to rescind Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) has sent a shock wave through many families, who now worry that some members may be deported to countries they have never known, except maybe as tourists.  But our School Board and I want to reassure students and parents within our school community who are Childhood Arrivals that Azusa Unified School District stands proudly with you.

Azusa Unified is not concerned with the immigration status of students or their families.  We don’t and won’t ask for proof of American citizenship, because that’s not our job.  Education is our work, and we welcome any child who comes to us in need of education.  No one is turned away.

In coming weeks and months, we will officially urge Congress to enact DACA into federal law.  In the meantime, we will continue to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of immigration status, are welcome, respected and protected at our schools.
